Matthew Moulthrip, (Matthew) born in England; died East Haven, 1st February, 1690-1 age 53. He was at East Haven in 1638; married 26th June, 1662 Hannah Thompson, daughter of John and Eleanor Thompson. Authorities differ as to Matthew's birth. His death record, shown above, places his birth in 1638, but history refers to his birth in England as stated. His will, distributing an estate, was probated 10th June, 1691, and recorded in Volume II of the New Haven Records. Allen Bull and Isaac Bradley were appraisers. He took the Oath of Fidelity in 1644. He lived in New Haven until his purchase of a farm in East Haven Village. His residence in 1648 was in the Oystershell-fields Quarter.

Matthew married Thompson, Hannah on 26 Jun 1662 in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Hannah (daughter of Thompson, John Jr. and ( ), Dorothy, daughter of Thompson, John, daughter of Thompson, John Jr. and ( ), Eleanor) was born about 1643 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT; died on 17 Jan 1713 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Notes:

Matthew Moulthrop, born, England. Was at New Haven in 1639; died, New Haven, 22nd December, 1668. Admitted to the First Church of New Haven before 1644. His wife, Jane, who died May, 1672, was admitted to the same church before 1661. Record of marriage, which took place in England, has not been found. Will in Volume i, page 143, of New Haven Probates, through which he disposes of comfortable estates for that period of time. Jane his widow, left a will recorded in Volume i, page 156, of the New Haven records.
The family name is thought to be of Danish origin and it seems probable that the family came from Denmark through England. The name is spelled variously in existing historical records as Moulthrip, Molthrop, Moultrop, Moulltrop, Moltroup, Moultroup, Moultrep, Moulthropp, and the latter would seem to be the original form.
Matthew, the immigrant, moved from New Haven to Stony River, East Haven, in 1662. Of the child Mary no further record has been found.
Matthew and his wife were members of the First Church at New Haven, and in Atwood's History of New Haven, their names are recorded in the seating of the meeting-house, from 1646 to 1665. The same history contains a map of the early New Haven Colony on which is shown the plot of land owned by Matthew Moulthrop.
Baker's History and Antiquities of New Haven gives authority for the statements of residence.

Matthew married Nicholl, Jane on 13 May 1633 in Wrawby, England. Jane (daughter of Nicholl, Thomas and George, Dorothy) was born before 04 Dec 1605 in Wrawby, Lincolshire, England; died on 13 May 1678 in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
