BAILEY'S REGIMENT, CONTINENTAL ARMY INVOLVED IN THE "LEXINGTON ALARM," 19 APR 1775 MAINE PIONEER FIRST SETTLER OF SUMNER, MAINE -------------- A BIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES BISBEE, by Larry Overmire (5th great grandson), Aug. 2008: Charles Bisbee was born in 1726 in East Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, the son of Moses and Mary (Reed) Bisbee. He married Beulah Howland, the daughter of Rouse and Ann (Bonney) Howland on Sept. 16, 1756 in Pembroke, Plymouth County. They had nine children: Elisha, Charles, Mary "Polly," Celia, Moses, John, Solomon, Calvin and Rouse. Charles was a farmer. After his marriage, he moved to Pembroke. He served in the Revolutionary War in the Continental Army and was involved in the Lexington Alarm on April 19, 1775. In June 1784, he and his family moved to Sumner, Oxford County, Maine. He is recognized as being the first settler of that community. Descendant Axel Reed in his genealogy described how circumstances unfolded: "At the close of the Revolutionary war, in which the father and two sons, Elisha and Charles, had taken part, there was an extensive emigration from the Old Colony towns in Massachusetts to the wilds of Maine. He bought land of Benjamin Darling, of Hanover, Mass., in a township in Maine then called Sharon, afterwards Butterfield or Sumner. In the summer of 1783 he visited his land and built a cheap tenement for his family to occupy later. He returned to Pembroke to spend the winter and the following spring set sail with his family for the new home. They sailed from Scituate harbor in a packet and landed at Yarmouth, proceeding through the wilderness to Sumner on horseback, arriving on the 5th day of June, 1784, the year in which the town of Sumner was incorporated. Dr. [Wm. B.] Lapham [secretary of the Maine Genealogical Society] says: 'He (Charles Bisbee) selected his land with good judgment, and with the aid of his seven stalwart sons he soon cleared him up a good farm. He suffered all the privations and hardships incident to a pioneer life, lived to see his children comfortably settled around him and enjoy much of the fruit of his toil, and he died June 3, 1807, the 23rd anniversary of the arrival in town. His good wife, Beulah Howland, died September 1, 1813, nine years later, and in her 76th year of age.' " Charles died in Sumner on June 3, 1807, at the age of 81. | 1539 | Vincent Jerome Mayor, 88, of North Street, Jim Thorpe, died on Friday, Aug. 23, in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. Vince was born Aug. 3, 1925, in East Mauch Chunk to the late Joseph and Blanche (Redline) Mayor. He graduated in 1943 from the former East Mauch Chunk High School and joined the U.S. Navy that same year.While serving in the Navy during World War II, he was an aviation radioman and trained at naval air stations in Jacksonville, Fla. (Cecil Field), and Hutchinson, Kan. After leaving the Navy, he married Natalie G. Melber on July 24,1954, and operated the former Mayor's Auto Service, an auto repair business in Jim Thorpe, with his brother, Robert Mayor, for 40 years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Sixth and North streets, Jim Thorpe. In retirement, he enjoyed reading, woodworking and crossword puzzles. He remained an avid aviation and military history enthusiast, frequenting air and space museums and devouring anything "airplane" related. Vince was a devoted and loving father of four, participating as a Little League coach and sharing his enjoyment of hiking, music and lifelong learning with his children during their childhood and beyond. His children wrote, "Dad had a kind heart and cared deeply about our success and happiness. He was always on your side and inspired us all with his unwavering love and support. We are grateful and cherish his love and our wonderful memories." Vince is survived by his wife, Natalie (Melber) Mayor; his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and George Smith of Tacoma, Wash.; a daughter, Kim Mayor of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Michael Barclay of Great Falls, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, David Mayor and Brooke Upton of Puyallup, Wash.; his sister, Joan Pfeiffer of Jim Thorpe; grandchildren, Brian Smith of Tacoma, Trevor Smith of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Michael Barclay Jr. of Great Falls; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Ellie Jade Smith of Camp Pendleton and Lily Smith of Tacoma. Vince was predeceased by his brother, Robert Mayor of Jim Thorpe. Service: The family will hold a private memorial service. Memorial donations in his name may be sent to St. John Lutheran Church, Sixth and North streets, Jim Thorpe. Arrangements by Edward F. | 1548 | Wayne was always a frail boy in his youth and often sickly. He was not involved at school activities much except for school dances. Wayne enlisted in the Army and spent time in India, one of the great adventures of his life. Wayne was not married that long as his wife left him because he was not a very reliable man. He loved to dance and have a good time and never seemed to worry too much about tomorrow. He worked as a male nurse's aide for many years and was never very close to his brother. He lived the last few years in a veterans home and seemed to be quite content, but a little eccentric. He sent away and received a certificate that said he was a priest and he often wore a clerical collar. He died in his sleep of a heart attack and was buried in a paupers grave as he had donated his body to science in exchange for the Burial. To the best of my knowledge no one from the family attended his funeral. There is a marker now at North Adams Cemetery next to his parents for him, however I'm not sure when he was moved there. | Damon, Wayne David (I37)
