Mrs. Nathan Hontz, one of Greater Lehighton's excellent aged ladies, happily celebrated her 71st birthday anniversary on Tuesday. There was a grand feast to which the guests did the very fullest justice. The Evening Leader hopes the venerable lady may live to celebrate many more such happy events. Those present were: Nathan Hontz, Charles Frantz and family, L. A. Shoemaker and family, Henry P. Hontz and family, Edwin Hontz and family, Walter Hontz and family, of town, and Mrs. H. Melher, of Mauch Chunk.

Mrs. Nathan Hontz Died This Morning.
After Illness Due to Old Age Mrs. Hontz Passes Away.
Mrs. Nathan Hontz died at four o'clock this morning after an illness of several months with general debility due to all age. Deceased was born in Lower Towamensing Township, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Walck, she was aged 74 years, 11 months and six days. Besides her aged husband the following grown up children survive: Mrs. Henry Miller, of Mauch Chunk; George Hontz, of California; Mrs. Ed Kauffman, of Allentown; Mrs. Lanious Shoemaker, Ed J. Hontz, Mrs. Charles Frantz, Henry Hontz, and Walter Hontz, of this city. Deceased was one of the oldest and most respected ladies in this city and had many friends who will greatly miss her.
The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at one o'clock with services at the house, Rev. D. A. Winter, pastor of Zion's Reformed church, will officiate at the last sad rites. Interment will be made in Gnauden Huetten cemetery. The Evening Leader tenders sympathy to the afflicted husband and children.

Compressed Chronology Of Lehighton Doings. Mrs. Mary, wife of Wilson Hontz, died early
Tuesday morning, aged fifty-nine years. She suffered from rheumatism and this affected her
heart. She was only ill a few hours before the end came. Deceased was a good mother and
seldom left her home to which she was greatly attached. Besides her husband she is survived by
five sons and three daughters, viz: James Hontz, of Allentown; Al. Hontz, Minneapolis; Mrs.
Henry Deibert, of Slatington; William, Thomas, Harry and Misses Alice and Sadie, of town.
The funeral took place from the family residence on North Third street yesterday and was largely
attended. Rev. Winter had charge of the services. Interment was made in the Gnaden Heutten
Cemetery

Bruce R. Melber, 85, of 623 South Ave., Jim Thorpe, died Tuesday in Gnaden Huetten Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Dorothy I. (Moulthrop) Melber. They observed their 56th wedding anniversary last year.
Melber was a machinist for the former Jersey Central Railroad in Jim Thorpe and Bethlehem for 30 years before retiring in 1970.
Born in Jim Thorpe, he was a son of the late Harry G. and Edna (McLean) Melber.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, Jim Thorpe.

Nathan L. Melber Sr., 85, a Carbon County funeral director for 40 years, died Monday in his home at 530 Center St., Jim Thorpe. He was the husband of Dollie E. (Pry) Melber. They were married 64 years this month.
He and his son, Edward F. of Jim Thorpe, operated the Nathan L. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, until 1973 when he retired and his son took over the business. It then became the Edward F. Melber Funeral Home.
The elder Melber received his funeral license in 1934 and was the third generation of morticians in his family. He worked for his uncle at the former Edward F. Melber Funeral Home in Upper Mauch Chunk.
He also was an embalmer for the former Wendell Swartz Funeral Home, Lehighton; the former Heller Funeral Home, Weissport; the former John Garrett Funeral, Summit Hill, and the former Lamont H. Zimmerman Funeral Home, Lehighton.
Melber also was a furniture upholsterer, 1930-38.
Born in Upper Mauch Chunk, he was a son of the late Harry and Edna (McLean) Melber.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, 6th and North streets, Jim Thorpe.
He was elected to Jim Thorpe National Bank's board of directors in 1940 and was chairman of the board from 1986 until 1988 when he was named director emeritus.
In 1988, he was one of 42 Carbon County voters inducted into the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame.
Survivors: Wife and son; other sons, Nathan Jr., James Sr. and Harry, all of Jim Thorpe; daughters, Margaret, wife of James Hartman, Adelle, wife of Bernard Kuhla, and Natalie, wife of Vincent Mayor, all of Jim Thorpe, and Raelene, wife of William Bevich of North Brunswick, N.J.; brother Adam of Pittsburgh; 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Obituary
Joyce C. Reed, of Jim Thorpe, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 17. She was the wife of the late William C. Reed, who passed away in 1979. Joyce was born in Mauch Chunk and was the daughter of the late Dorothy (Moulthrop) and Bruce Melber. She worked for many years as a secretary/bookkeeper at Neast & Co and later became secretary/bookkeeper for Penn Hill Furniture. She graduated from Mauch Chunk High School Class of 1952 for which she was one of the speakers. She loved her family and enjoyed the time spent with her brothers and sisters and her many nieces and nephews. She loved her church family at St. John's Lutheran Church In-The-Heights, Jim Thorpe, where she taught Sunday school for more than 55 years and loved every minute that she spent with the children. She was an inspiration to all, both students and teachers, whose lives she had touched. Her favorite pastime was playing the piano, which provided her with hours of entertainment, putting puzzles together, gardening and nature, and coming up with crafty projects that she would make and give to her family and friends. She had good neighbors and friends, and appreciated everything that they would do for her, and always tried to be there for anyone that needed a friend, even people that she didn't know. When she was in rehab in the Mahoning Valley Nursing Home, her goal was to see a smile on everyone she met, so she would stop to talk to everyone, or just reach out and touch them and give them a big smile and tell them to have a nice day. Joyce will be missed dearly by her many friends and family. The world is a better place for her having lived. Joyce is survived by sisters, Phyllis Esrang of Jim Thorpe; Doris Farrell of Bethlehem; Sharon, wife of Al Damon of Manchester; Donna, wife of Richard Armbruster of Jim Thorpe; brothers, Bruce Melber, Donald Melber and wife Dianne; all of Jim Thorpe, and many nieces and nephews.

Edward F. Melber Sr. Edward F. Melber Sr., 83, of Bear Creek Lakes, Jim Thorpe, passed away on Friday, March 20, in his home with his family at his side. He was the husband of Constance B. (Clay) Melber. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Oct. 6, 2014. Born in Mauch Chunk, he was a son of the late Nathan L. Melber Sr. and Dollie E. (Pry) Melber. He was a 1949 graduate of the former East Mauch Chunk High School. Melber was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and served as a medical corpsman on the U.S.S. Repose in Korea and Japan. He was a licensed funeral director since 1955 and retired from the Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, where he had worked for his father until owning and operating the business, retiring in 2009. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in the Heights, Jim Thorpe, where he had served many terms on the council. The deceased had been president of the former YMCA directors of Jim Thorpe. He was a chief deputy coroner of Carbon County for over 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 304, Jim Thorpe, the Club Chateau fishing club along the Lackawaxen River and the NRA. Ed loved to fish, hunt deer, turkeys and especially grouse, for which he was well known. Besides his wife Connie, he is survived by four children, sons, Edward F. Melber Jr., RPH, and his wife, Anne, of Jim Thorpe, Thomas N. Melber, and his wife, Mary, of Weissport, and Robert J. Melber of Apache Junction, AZ, and a daughter, Susan D., wife of Ricky Meckes of Jim Thorpe; four sisters, Margaret Hartman and Adelle, wife of Bernard Kuhla, both of Jim Thorpe, Natalie Mayor of Puyallup, WA, and Raelene Bevich of Lehighton; three brothers, Nathan L. Melber Jr., and his wife, Joan, James H. Melber, and his wife, Nancy, and Harry K. Melber, and his wife, Shelley, all of Jim Thorpe; four grandchildren, Marie Heydt, Nathan Melber, Joshua Melber and Kara Melber; five great-grandchildren, Levi, Gabriel, Ava, Dominic and Colleen; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a son, Joseph Clay Melber; and a brother, Glenn Melber.

Donna L. Goerlitz
Donna L. Goerlitz, 66, of Forest Inn Road, Palmerton, Lower Towamensing Township, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Credar Crest. She was the wife of Carl F. Goerlitz since July 31, 1965.
Donna worked as a dietary aide for the Palmerton Hospital. Previously, she was a machine operator for various garment mills in the Palmerton area.
Born in Palmerton, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Edith (Melber) Gable.
She was a member of Faith Alive United Methodist Church, Palmerton.She was a 1965 graduate of Plainfield High School, in New Jersey.
Donna enjoyed caring for her pets, her flower garden, reading her Bible and novels. She enjoyed going on road trips, and watching her sitcoms on television.
Surviving with her husband are daughters Lorene M. and Linette A., both of Palmerton; seven grandchildren, Christie, Amanda, Matthew, Brandon, Garrett, Samuell, and Skylar; and a brother, Earl Gable in New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by a son, Carl L. in May of 2013.
Services: Memorial services at 3 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Campton Funeral Home, 525 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, with the Rev. Richard F. Wilcock, officiating. Private interment. Call Friday, 2-3 p.m. Contributions in her name may be made to the church, P.O. Box 177, 678 Pine St., Palmerton, PA 18071.
