Tombstone in Buckfield marked only "Father and Mother", next to Wilson.
Bradbury was a very fun loving guy with a good sense of humor. He was known for his practical jokes on family and friends. He was a small man in stature only measuring 5'3''. He worked his dad's farm and had a farm of his own which Wilson took over later. He raised cattle for both milk and beef. Milk went to the local dairy. Beef was shipped to Boston, along with apples from his orchard. His main cash crop was corn that he sold to a local cannery. He sold pigeons to sell in Boston which he sold as fresh "quail". He worked in town as a butcher, in the winter and was suspected to sell deer meat as veal.
When the train went into the creek it was never set up again for freight. This changed a lot of commerce trading for Buckfield. Getting products to Boston now was impossible. Cash was tight and Bradbury turned to running Rum from Canada threw Smuggler's Notch in Vermont. This was across a lake and Bradbury would keep most of the rum on the outside of the boat connected by ice thongs and if chased would squeeze the top and the rum would drop to the bottom of the lake making it easier for him to get away or at least have nothing to get caught with. He sold his rum to a local pharmacy who had a run in with the town. One Sunday morning the preacher warned his Parrish that anyone who drank could not cross the threshold of his church next Sunday. Later that week the church and the school next to it were burned down. No one was arrested but the pharmacist left town never to return and his accomplice was never revealed. Local gossip has it that Brad was part of this incident. He spent a lot of time with a man named Larry Fisher and they were partners in the rum running.
As time went on his wife Viola left him; traveling with a salesman named Joe Bowles; to Boston. He sold pots and pans and known to locals as a Jew boy. She went to Boston with him and divorced Bradbury and later married Walter Reed. She took Elbert her youngest son with her never to return to Buckfield except to be buried with Bradbury.
Bradbury was a hunter and a fisherman as most men in those days were. He was a heavy drinker and a chain smoker. When he died they gave him nicotine pills so he would lay still and die quitely. He lived his last days living with his son Wilson.
John Linwood Damon Jr. told Brian Edward Damon these stories as he had first hand knowledge of his uncle and talked about him with a smile and a chuckle. He ended each story with the disclaimer " or so I heard".
Bradbury married Gammon, Viola Abbie on 18 Nov 1883 in Canton, Oxford Co., ME. Viola (daughter of Gammon, Charles Harrison and Sturtevant, Mary B.) was born on 08 Oct 1867 in Buckfield, Oxford Co., ME; died on 01 Oct 1918 in Brockton, Plymouth Co., MA; was buried in Buckfield, Oxford Co., ME. Wilson owned a farm that Bradbury had before him. Wilson and his brothers also did a lot of logging and Wilson owned a pair of oxen to drag the lumber out of the woods. He was very proud of the work that those oxen could do. Like most of the Damon's he loved to hunt for both food and pleasure. His favorite pastime to relax was fox hunting. His parents are buried in his funeral plot.

He married Lena Cushman and after he found out she was having an affair with another man, he committed suicide by hanging himself at home from a water pipe in the basement of his house. His brothers had spent the day with him and thought he would be alright and found him the next morning. Harry had been drinking a lot that day and they thought he would be able to go home and sleep it off. He was buried in the Cushman family plot as none in the Damon family would take responsibility for his death and wanted Lena to be accountable for her actions.

Notes:
Elbert was the youngest child of Bradbury and Viola. He moved from Buckfield with his mother when she left with a traveling salesman, Joe Bowles. They moved to Boston where she married Charles W. Reed in 1906. He never moved back to Maine. He moved to North Adams, Mass to become a policeman and there meet Pearl VanArman and had two sons. He later became a 3rd class engineer at Sprauge Electric. At the time of his death he was working as a maintenance man there and during the winter he forgot his insulin and got caught at work during a snow storm and went into insulin shock and never recovered.
As we remember him he was a very happy person who liked to have a drink occasionally and he was very handy around the house. He built a tool shed and would spend a lot of time there. He used the paving stones form the North Adams streets when they pulled them up for the foundation and a retaining wall. He also started building a second larger house which he never completed. This building was to be partially used as a guest house.
At a family reunion in 1996 in Buckfield he was remembered, because he went back several times to visit and was a very friendly person who had a real wild side about him. He took Laura Damon back with him to visit in North Adams once and she rode back in the rumble seat and remembers it as a great trip of her youth. Laura also remembers Pearl and his two sons and the great summer vacation she had with them.
Once he was married, he never went back to visit his mother, however he did make a few trip's to Buckfield to visit friends and relatives there.

Notes:
Brian Damon first met John at a Family reunion in June of 1997. The following are some of the stories told by him at that meeting.
John was sitting in the room when I first meet him and quite alert for a man of 90. At first he was reluctant to talk to me but, after a few minutes we started to talk and had a wonderful time. John told me he loved hunting and fishing. His favorite gun is the 30/00/6 and his 12 gauge shotgun. He had at one time 30 to 40 guns and his Craig was his favorite. When he would go hunting just walking the mountains was as much an enjoyment as hunting itself. He would often walk 20 miles a day when hunting. Deer season was whenever he was out hunting and even though he never went Moose hunting sometimes they got in the way and he would have to bring one home. When he was younger hunting was a vital part of the families diet during the winter and spring. When I asked him if he liked fly fishing or reel he told me when he really wanted fish to eat a 12 gauge would usually work well. He lived on a farm and raised cattle and poultry, and pigeons, that he sold and was shipped to Boston on the train.
John served in WWII and was with the US Army's 2nd Division. He was with the division when they hit Normandy beach during D-day. John was laying on the beach when German planes were strafing the beach. There were 40 or 50 bodies laying all around him and he laid there while waiting to get over a hedge row. While waiting he was shot in the hip and leg and walks with a limp now due to these injuries. He went on to fight with the 2nd division, and march across Europe and later into Berlin. He was also stationed in Hawaii but, didn't like it because he felt it was a foreign country, and not really part of the United States. His home is in Buckfield and he loves it more than any place he has ever visited.
John did not get married until after the war and he was 45 years old. He then told me he had to make up for lost time and proceeded to have 5 children. He often showed a lot of quite emotion when relating these stories with a sadness about the war or a chuckle when talking about his children or Bradbury. He told me "We are all short timers in life so enjoy because it goes by so fast ". I asked him about the rumor that Damon's were stubborn and he told me with a smile, " we're not stubborn but, If you don't think as I do then I guess you should go your way and I'll go mine. I had a wonderful time talking to him and felt as if I had known him all my life after only a short afternoon with him. For the first time in my life someone saw family traits and resemblance in me that were unknown to me before this day. It gave me a feeling of belonging and I will always be grateful to him for that.
He asked me before he left to remind him who I was and who I belonged to in the family. I told him I was his nephews grandson. He wanted to know what happened to Elbert. When I told him he died at 48 of diabetes, John was a little disgusted, and said that was stupid he should have taken care of himself better, by dieting and lots of exercise. Walt, Gayle's wife and a doctor agreed with him and said he was probably right. He loved to tell me the stories of Bradbury and chuckled a lot when telling me the tales. John tired after a good meal and wanted to go home and said now it's time to go, and very simply got up and left.

Millie remembers Elbert Damon coming to visit in the early 1930's. She told us he was a very fun loving man. He took her back to North Adams to visit him in his Model B in the rumble seat. It was a long trip as there were no highways then and a very bumpy trip that shook her all over. Bruises and a sunburn were a result of that trip.

Notes:
Wayne was always a frail boy in his youth and often sickly. He was not involved at school activities much except for school dances. Wayne enlisted in the Army and spent time in India, one of the great adventures of his life. Wayne was not married that long as his wife left him because he was not a very reliable man. He loved to dance and have a good time and never seemed to worry too much about tomorrow. He worked as a male nurse's aide for many years and was never very close to his brother. He lived the last few years in a veterans home and seemed to be quite content, but a little eccentric. He sent away and received a certificate that said he was a priest and he often wore a clerical collar.
He died in his sleep of a heart attack and was buried in a paupers grave as he had donated his body to science in exchange for the Burial. To the best of my knowledge no one from the family attended his funeral. There is a marker now at North Adams Cemetery next to his parents for him, however I'm not sure when he was moved there.
Wayne married Tremblay, Lorraine Rose on 23 Apr 1949 in Adams, Berkshire Co., MA. Lorraine was born in Mar 1931 in Adams, Berkshire Co., MA; died on 2 Sep 1998 in Fall River, Bristol Co., MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:
Elbert has always been known to us as "Al". He was always an outgoing boy in school and very active with his friends. He was in Scouts and spent all his summers at Boy Scout Camps, with his father. Al spent a lot of vacations with his grandmother in Mass. He loved spending time with his grandmother Damon "Grammy" and his Uncle Gerald, who was about his same age, running around Williamstown, Mass. He entered the United States Air Force when he was 19 and was trained as a Medic. Al was stationed at Charleston, S.C., but spent a lot of time flying overseas to such places as Brazil, Japan, Vietnam, Surinam and Dominican Republic. These flights were primarily to treat Military personnel in isolated areas. He met his wife Sharon during his second year in the service. They were married one year later and then moved back to York Pa. when he was discharged as a Sgt. Al always took care of the family with medical advice and help to all.
He then went to work at a Ford dealership, as a Credit manager for a number of years. He then went into work as a general contractor, and developed low income housing in the City of York, PA. After a number of years being self employed he has turned his contracting skills into a full time position as General director of housing at an elderly housing project in the City of York, PA where he has become a trusted associate that the elderly all appreciate his presence. Al raised his boys with the same caring attention he put into his medical career and his scouting career, always looking to help others, and set an example for them. He has been a family member that we all look to for advice and leadership. He continued to show his caring attitude by helping his parents as they have retired and needed constant attention.
Al has been the guiding force of this genealogy study of the Damon family. He has a sincere desire to teach his children and their children the true meaning of family and with this the hopes of the future by presenting a history of the past.

304. | Baughman, Cesar Augusto (146.K.S.5, 52.Elbert4, 17.Elbert3, 7.Bradbury2, 1.John1) was born on 20 May 1974 in Guatamala; died on 01 Jan 1989 in Red Lion, York Co., PA. Notes:
Cesar hung himself with a horse leader, on a tree out in the pasture. They spotted him in the morning from the kitchen window. Billy told Karen to keep the other kids in the house, while he ran to the tree and tried to hold him up while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. Cesar was a native Indian of Guatemala who was deaf and adopted by Karen and Billy. They went to Guatemala to pick him up and found a very scared little boy. He had watched his parents killed by government troops and they he went into hiding in the mountains with other refugees. When Karen went to pick him up there were problems because he was about to turn 12 and he would have been drafted into the Army that killed his parents. Karen obtained help from a US senator to process the adoption before his birthday.
He adapted very well at first but as time went on he was overwhelmed with memories of the past and confused over problems at home. Karen found pictures in his room that he drew of his parents being shot. He was a student of York County Vo Tech where he studied construction skills. He was also involved in wrestling, and he was very good with the animals at home. They had numerous farm animals. We remember Cesar as a shy boy with a big grin and always very polite. He was a wonderful addition to our family and we will always miss him.
