    Alexander was born January 29, 1737/8 at North Kingstown, Rhode Island. He first married Susannah Brown, prior to April 9, 1762 when as Susannah Huling she gave a receipt for a legacy by the will of her grandfather, Benjamin Congdon, to her Father Ebenezer Brown. She died in 1773, having had one son, John, who was born in October, 1764. Alexander's second wife, Mary Havens [Allen] was the widow of his first cousin once removed, John Allen. They were married at North Kingstown by Elder Phillip Jenkins on March 31, 1777.

    Alexander was a private soldier in the French and Indian War, and later the captain of a privateer in that same war. After the war, he was master of the sloop Lucinda, owned by John Brown. In 1777 he moved to Vermont, arriving at Bennington on August 16, 1777, where he and his son John participated in the Battle of Bennington as volunteers. He later served nine days in Captain Jonas Galusha's Company (October, 1780). Thus, however brief his service, he was a veteran of the American War for Independence.

    In 1878, our ancestor George M. Huling dictated a letter to his son Edwin, which was addressed to Ray Greene Huling, containing reminiscences of his grandfather Alexander. An excerpt follows:

    My father says his first remembrance of Capt. Alex was about the year 1810 or 12 (when) he was living in Shaftsbury, Vt. ... Capt. Alex soon became a cripple after I remember him but with all his suffering...he had a remarkable facility for relating anecdotes and experiences of his early life. He first served as a private soldier in the French war under Johnson. We then find him engaged in the same war as captain of a privateer. One anecdote of the cruise I clearly remember. He says he was cruising off the coast of New England; he being a man of clear eyesight was the first to discover a speck on the water. After sailing on the direction indicated a few hours the rest of the crew were able to discern it; they put on all the sail and made for it when they soon found out it was a large French man-of-war. He told his officers they had better give up the chase as he thought she carried too many guns for them. When they intimated a want of courage on his part; he then resolved to test their own courage, let the result be what it might. Keeping after the stranger, who made no effort to get out of the way, they soon came near enough to convince the whole crew she was too strong for them and they all admitted their inability to cope with them. The captain replied that they were so anxious to get a taste of the enemy's gunpowder that they should now have an opportunity. They sailed close enough to give the Frigate a broadside and receiving one themselves in turn they concluded to change their course and being faster sailer than their enemy they soon got out of reach but not without loss of life, as one of the enemy's cannon balls passed through the kitchen breaking a stone jar and cut a Negro cook in two parts. Afterward they were taken by a large French frigate and made prisoner of war. He lost all his property .... he remained prisoner but a short time when he was exchanged. After peace was declared he engaged in the service of sailing a ship for John Brown of Providence, R. I. He made several successful voyages to the West Indies, New Orleans, and other parts. (He) was engaged in Brown's service several years, but when on a homeward trip from the Indies, he experienced such terrific seas off Cape Hatteras that he expected every moment the ship would be lost. He then resolved if he ever reached port he would forever quit sailing: he kept his promise....

    Another incident happened when he was sailing which perhaps would be worth mentioning, when out at sea he picked up a crew of 6 or 7 sailors in an open boat whose vessel had been struck with lightening; they were nearly famished; he kindly took care of them. They being French, fortunately he fell in with a French ship within a few days who received them and took them home in safety. Capt. Alex. being short of provisions, the French captain supplied him freely.

    Capt. Alex. was a man of good habits but he would have his quart of rum every week; a habit he got accustomed to when at sea. My father frequently got it for him when a boy. (He was) honest and upright in his deal; a man of small stature but a compact and wirey frame...

    Alexander died May 31, 1816 in his 79th year, and is buried in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery, Shaftsbury, Vermont.

    Mrs. Martha M, ?Mattie? Arksey, 100, of the Vilas Home, died Tuesday at CVPH Medical Center.

    She was born the daughter of George Henry and Sarah (Laury) VanArman.

    Mrs. Arksey was first a teacher in Mooers and later in Vermont. She then became an ordained deaconess in the Wesleyan Church and served for many years as a missionary. Along with her husband, the Rev. Charles Monroe Arksey, she preached in several places in the Northern Tier, Michigan and Canada.

    After her husband's death in 1940, she ran a mission in Philadelphia, PA, until she retired in 1969, returning to the North Country.

    Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Marion Campney of Creston, OH; three grandchildren; a g-grandchild.

    A son, Herman Arksey, died previously.

    Harold L. Goodwin, 75 dies

    Harold Leland Goodwin, 75, author of 43 books, including the Rick Brant Science Adventure Series, and a retired government official, died of cardiac arrest Sunday, Feb. 18, at his home in Bethesda.

    Mr. Goodwin, a native of Ellenburg, N.Y., lived in Montgomery County for 40 years. His books also appeared under the pen names John Blaine, Blake Savage and Hal Gordon. His 25 Rick Brant series, including "The Lost City," "Sea Gold," "The Pirates of Shan," and "The Deadly Dutchman," were published from 1947 to 1968.

    The series was noted for its accurate portrayal of places, Mr. Goodwin's travels on behalf of the government having taken him to every continent, including Antarctica. The books also were known for their accurate portrayal of science and scientific advances. The final book in the series, 'The Magic Talisman," remins in p rint.

    Mr Goodwin also was known for his books on space travel, including "The Real Book About Stars," "The Real Book About Space Travel," and "All About Rockets and Space Flight."

    During the 1960s, Mr Goodwin served as special assistant to the administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where he handled public interpretation of the agency's missions and achievements during the Mercury programs. He served as a special presidential envoy to Pope John XVIII, from whom he obtained blessed St. Christopher medals for the original Mercury astronauts.

    Prior to joining NASA in 1961, Mr Goodwin served as director of atomic test operations for the federal Civil Defense Administration for six years. In that capacity he conducted research into the effects of nuclear weapons on civilian systems and structures.

    During that time, Mr Goodwin was selected Outstanding Young Man in Federal Service by the U.S.Junior Chamber of Commerce. He subsequently served as scientific advisor to the U.S.Information Agency, where his reponsibilities included planning policy direction for the agency's worldwide scientific and technical programs.

    Before World War II, Mr Goodwin served as White House correcpondent for Transradio News Service. During the war he served as a sergeant and combat correspondent in the Marines and saw service in five campaigns in the Pacific.

    His broadcast from New Caledonia over CBS "News of the World" was the first Armed Forces broadcast of the war in the South Pacific. He was commissioned from the ranks as an officer, and received the Air Medal with Presidential Citation for meritorious acts for combat missions in the South Pacific, including nine sorties over Iwo Jima.

    Following the war, Mr Goodwin served in the Foreign Service for three years in the Philippines, where he developed the State Department's Southeast Asia mass media programs.

    In 1969, Mr Goodwin became deputy director of the National Sea Grant Program, from which he retired in 1973. He conceived and planned Operation FLARE, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's first man-in-the-sea project. Loaned by Sea Grant to the President's Commission on Marine Science, Engineering and Resources (the Stratton Commission), he was the principal writer of the landmark report, "Our Nation and the Sea". He also wrote "Challenge of the Seven Seas" with Sen. Claiborne Pell.

    He was the recipient of meritorioius service awards from the Civil Defense Administration and from the USLA, and he received the Silver Medal from the U.S.Department of Commerce in 1972. He also received the James Dugan award from the American Littoral Society for his contributions to aquatic science, and was awarded the National Sea Grant Award in 1983. He was a lecturer at American University's Business Council for International Understanding and at the Foreign Service Institute.

    He was a member of World Aquaculture Society, Amtarctican Society, American Science Film Association, Marine Technology Society, National Marine Education Association, American Littoral Society, Boston Sea Rovers, Washington Book Guild, National Association of Underwater Instructors, and the International Board of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

    Mr Goodwin is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Libby", three sons, Alan C. of Plymouth, Minn, R. Christopher of New Market and Derek V of Scottsdale, Ariz; two grandsons and one granddaughter.

    A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow at Concord-St. Andrews United Methodist Church, River andGoldsboro roads, Bethesda, with burial in Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m.

    The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Concord-St Andrews United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.

    Notes:

    Wayne was always a frail boy in his youth and often sickly. He was not involved at school activities much except for school dances. Wayne enlisted in the Army and spent time in India, one of the great adventures of his life. Wayne was not married that long as his wife left him because he was not a very reliable man. He loved to dance and have a good time and never seemed to worry too much about tomorrow. He worked as a male nurse's aide for many years and was never very close to his brother. He lived the last few years in a veterans home and seemed to be quite content, but a little eccentric. He sent away and received a certificate that said he was a priest and he often wore a clerical collar.

    He died in his sleep of a heart attack and was buried in a paupers grave as he had donated his body to science in exchange for the Burial. To the best of my knowledge no one from the family attended his funeral. There is a marker now at North Adams Cemetery next to his parents for him, however I'm not sure when he was moved there.

    Notes:

    Elbert has always been known to us as "Al". He was always an outgoing boy in school and very active with his friends. He was in Scouts and spent all his summers at Boy Scout Camps, with his father. Al spent a lot of vacations with his grandmother in Mass. He loved spending time with his grandmother Damon "Grammy" and his Uncle Gerald, who was about his same age, running around Williamstown, Mass. He entered the United States Air Force when he was 19 and was trained as a Medic. Al was stationed at Charleston, S.C., but spent a lot of time flying overseas to such places as Brazil, Japan, Vietnam, Surinam and Dominican Republic. These flights were primarily to treat Military personnel in isolated areas. He met his wife Sharon during his second year in the service. They were married one year later and then moved back to York Pa. when he was discharged as a Sgt. Al always took care of the family with medical advice and help to all.
    He then went to work at a Ford dealership, as a Credit manager for a number of years. He then went into work as a general contractor, and developed low income housing in the City of York, PA. After a number of years being self employed he has turned his contracting skills into a full time position as General director of housing at an elderly housing project in the City of York, PA where he has become a trusted associate that the elderly all appreciate his presence. Al raised his boys with the same caring attention he put into his medical career and his scouting career, always looking to help others, and set an example for them. He has been a family member that we all look to for advice and leadership. He continued to show his caring attitude by helping his parents as they have retired and needed constant attention.
    Al has been the guiding force of this genealogy study of the Damon family. He has a sincere desire to teach his children and their children the true meaning of family and with this the hopes of the future by presenting a history of the past.

    Notes:

    Cesar hung himself with a horse leader, on a tree out in the pasture. They spotted him in the morning from the kitchen window. Billy told Karen to keep the other kids in the house, while he ran to the tree and tried to hold him up while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. Cesar was a native Indian of Guatemala who was deaf and adopted by Karen and Billy. They went to Guatemala to pick him up and found a very scared little boy. He had watched his parents killed by government troops and they he went into hiding in the mountains with other refugees. When Karen went to pick him up there were problems because he was about to turn 12 and he would have been drafted into the Army that killed his parents. Karen obtained help from a US senator to process the adoption before his birthday.
    He adapted very well at first but as time went on he was overwhelmed with memories of the past and confused over problems at home. Karen found pictures in his room that he drew of his parents being shot. He was a student of York County Vo Tech where he studied construction skills. He was also involved in wrestling, and he was very good with the animals at home. They had numerous farm animals. We remember Cesar as a shy boy with a big grin and always very polite. He was a wonderful addition to our family and we will always miss him.
