    Stephen Rakocy is recorded as " Istvan Rakoczy" on the birth records of Spissky Stiavnik, Slovakia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (it was called Scavnik Szepes,Hungary under Hungarian rule). It is now recorded as Stephanus Rakoczy, the Slovak spelling. Stephen John Rakocy entered the United States on Jan.10,1907 in New York City,having left from Fiume,Italy on the ship "Carpathia" on December 25,1906. The passenger list stated that he had $28 on his person,was met by his brother Janos (John) and his destination was Gypsum,Ohio.He was 5 foot 3 inches on the passenger list. His Ellis Island form lists his name as "Istvan Rakocszy".His "Declaration of Intention" to begin the process of naturalization was dated March 12,1927 with his occupation listed as "Boiler Maker's Helper" and his address at 1012 Campbell St. Youngstown,Ohio. His height was listed as 5 feet 5 inches and weighed 155 pounds,with brown hair and grey eyes He was naturalized in Youngstown on Sept. 20,1929.

    He lived at 972 Campbell St. in Youngstown at the time of his naturalization. His sponsors were John J. Yavorsky of 530 Fithian St., an Electrician Foreman, and John Staron
    of 2909 Julian St., a U.S.Mail Motor Serviceman.

    He was the son of John and Anna Hudzik Rakoczy. He retired in 1955 from Republic Steel Corp. after 42 years of service. He was a member of St. Matthias Church, Slovak

    "I remember Tsedo (grandpa) had a green thumb. At his house on Shady Run Rd., I recall him grafting fruit tree branches on other varieties of fruit trees. Since Tsedo never
    did learn how to drive, my dad or one of my uncles would take him to the McCullough farm at 8851 North Lima Rd. in Poland,Ohio to graft trees for Mr. McCullough. I also recall the smoke-house he had in the back of his house on Cooper Street where he would smoke slabs of bacon. I really enjoyed sitting with him and sharing that bacon as he would cut pieces off to eat,with some rye bread. He also had tools to repair his own shoes, he was a self-reliant person."     From "Descendants of Josephus Rakoczy";
    John entered the United States on February 18,1906 at Baltimore,Maryland after leaving from Bremen,Germany . His "Declaration of Intention" for naturalization( dated May 5,1934) states that his occupation was "section man" ,and he was 5' 5" tall,weighing 145 pounds and had a crippled left foot. John was married to his wife Katherine Lestinsky in Youngstown,Ohio on November 9,1911. He then moved to Fort Dodge,Iowa where their son John was born on May 12,1912. there were gypsum mines at that time in Fort Dodge, so that is why he may have gone there. John and his wife then moved to Gypsum,Ohio where he worked at the gypsum mines. This was around 1913-22. Children Joseph and Julia were born in Gypsum. Also working at the gypsum mines and living in Gypsum was his brother Stephen and wife Katherine. Their daughter Anne was born in Gypsum. Gypsum,Ohio is between Port Clinton and Lakeside. John and family then moved to Lakeside where he got a job with the Lakeside and Marblehead Railroad, where he worked until he retired. Then John went to work for the State Park at Danbury( on Sandusky Bay east of Gypsum) until he passed away in 1947.

    His funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Church in Marblehead and burial was made in the church cemetery. The Rev. A.J.Schaefer officiated. Church is at 802 Barclay

    Obituary of Anna Rakocy
    Mrs. Anna R. Stanislaw, 73, of 5200 West Blvd., died at 12:10 a.m. today in Saint Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, after apparently suffering a heart attack at her daughter's home.
    Mrs. Stanislaw was born July 18, 1908, in Marblehead, Ohio, a daughter of Steve and Catherine Dvornicky Rakocy, and lived in Youngstown 60 years. She retired 11 years ago from the accounting department of the Republic Steel Corp., where she worked 30 years. Prior to that, she worked 10 years at Strouss. She was a member of the Saint Charles Church, its Altar Guild, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Padre Pio Prayer Group and the Legion of Mary. Her husband, John D., whom she married June 7, 1927, died November 5, 1980.
    She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Doris Jean Vinkler of Boardman; a son, Doctor Jerome Stanislaw of Warren; four brothers, Steve of Poland, and Joseph, Andrew, and Michael of Youngstown; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Rohovsky of Leesburg, Fla., Mrs. Margaret Roberts of Hollywood, Fla., Sister Delphine V.S.C. of Pittsburg, Pa., and Mrs. Theresa Smrecansky of Boardman; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Funeral Home.

    YOUNGSTOWN- Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and 1:30 p.m. in St. Christine Church for Mary T. Rohovsky,88, of Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home,Niles, formerly of 3200 Canfield Road,Youngstown, who died Thursday Morning at the nursing home.
    Mrs. Rohovsky was born July 22,1912, in Youngstown, a daugter of Stephen and Catherine Dvornicky Rakocy.
    A practical nurse, she worked 24 years at South Side Hospital before retiring in 1974.
    She was a charter member of the church and was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague and senior citizens group there. She was also a member of Cornersburg Happy Seniors.
    Her husband, Joseph E., whome she married Sept. 4, 1934, died Nov. 16, 1984.
    She leaves two sons, Jospeh E. Jr. of Clarkston,Mich., and Dr. Michael W. of New Hope,Pa.; a daughter, Dr. Mary Donahue of North Liberty, Iowa; two brothers,Andrew Rakocy of Youngstown and Michael Rakocy of Boardman; three sisters, Margaret Roberts of Hollywood,Fla.,Sister Agnes Delphine of Perrysville,Pa., and Theresa Smrecansky of Boardman; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
    Two brothers, Stephen and Joseph Rakocy; two sisters, Anna Stanislaw and Helen Rakocy; and a grandson are deceased.
    Friends may call for one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

    "Newman,Ga.- There will be funeral services Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaw Church for Margaret Roberts, 87, formerly of Youngstown, who passed away Thursday at Bobby's Place Assisted Living Center in Georgia.
    Mrs. Roberts was born June 10,1914 in Youngstown, a daughter of Stephen and Catherine Dvornicky Rakocy.
    She was a homemaker and a member of the church. She was also involved in many other organizations, including St. Stan's Infant Jesus of Prague, St. Stan's Post No. 1222 and Msgr. Mears Ladies Knights of Columbus. She was a past president of the Catholic War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary.
    Her first husband, Stephen Kurta, whom she married in 1939, died in 1953. Her second husband, Frank Roberts, whom she married in 1959, passed away in 1966.
    She leaves many loved ones behind who will cherish her memory, including two sons, Robert Kurta of Stow and Steve Kurta of Cortland; a daughter, Kathy Szush of Newman; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Pitko and Rosemary Sulik, both of Youngstown; two brothers, Andy Rakocy of Youngstown and Michael Rakocy of Poland; two sisters, Theresa Smrecansky of Boardman and Sister Mary Delphine Rakocy of Pittsburgh; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by two stepsons, Larry and Frank Roberts Jr., two sisters, Mary Rehovsky and Anna Stanislaw; and two brothers, Steve and Joseph Rakocy.
    Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, where St. Stan's Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will hold a prayer service at 4:45 p.m."

    Joseph was born at his parents' home on Columbus Ave. in Youngstown, delivered by Dr. Taylor with Mrs. John Stanislaw (mother-in-law of Anne Rakocy) assisting. Birth registry states that there were 9 other children living and 5 other children dead at the time of the probate court registration (Aug.5,1965). He lived at 1203 E.Indianola from about 1941 to 1945 then 3121 Pine Hollow Dr. (with Andy Kuzak) from 1945 to 1952. He and his family moved to 614 1/2 Oak Hill Ave,living there in 1952, he then moved to 2824 Jean Street where he lived from 1953 to 1969. In 1969 moved to 330 E.Avondale where he lived until his death.
    He lived with his parents at 2543 Tampa in Youngstown from about 1937 to 1941. He was baptized on Dec.10,1916 at St. Matthias Church by Father John M. Gerenda, the sponsors being Joseph Petrencik and Catherine Petrencik. he was confirmed on June 13, 1926 at St. Matthias Church by Rt. Rev. J. Schrembs.
    He was a scarfer at Republic Steel Corp. where he worked for 42 years, retiring in December 1978. He was a member of St. Matthias Church, its Holy Name Society, USW Local 1331, and its retirees group. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, inducted on June 15,1945, serving on the U.S.S. Chester, a Heavy Cruiser. Attended basic training at Great Lakes Training Center outside of Chicago. Leaving from Philadelphia, his ship passed through the Panama Canal, went to Guam and the Kwajelain Is. and reached Ominato Island in Japan in October 1945. He returned to San Bruno,California where his wife Margaret met him and stayed in Oakland,California. He was discharged in April 1946 with the rank of A/S,S2/C.
    He was also an officer in the Order of the Royal Buffaloes, known as the Ro-Buff Club, which was a social club formed from a group of friends working at Republic Steel. They rented a storefront on Poland Ave. as a social room and fielded a softball team for a number of years in the late 1940's and early 1950's.
    Tom Horvat was also a member of the club.

    Andrew Edward Rakocy, 90
    STRUTHERS - Andrew Edward Rakocy, 90, died early the morning of Sept. 16 at Omni Manor Health Care Center. Andrew was born in Youngstown Oct. 30, 1918, a son of Stephen and Catherine Dvornicky Rakocy. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy SeaBees as a gunner's mate 3rd Class. He was stationed in both Guam and Hawaii. After the war, Andrew worked as an inventory supervisor at Sharon Steel, retiring in 1981 after 41 years of service. In addition, he was employed as a landscaper with Terrace Gardens for 10 years, from 1968 to 1978.
    Andrew was a member of St. Matthias Church and of the Holy Name Society, the Sacred Heart and Rosary Society, First Catholic Slovak Union No. 731 and Slovak Catholic Sokol No. 108. He also played on the Sokol, Jednota and Taft Avenue Chance golf leagues.
    He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Hrepko Babik, whom he married Mar. 20, 1991; his sons, Edward (Paula) of Youngstown and Terry (Carol) of Bourbonnais, Ill.; his stepdaughter, Beverly Babik of Boardman; his stepsons, Michael J. (Christine) Babik also of Boardman and Richard (Brenda) Babik of Houston; his brother, Michael Rakocy of Poland; his sister, Theresa Smrecansky of Minneapolis; his grandchildren, Andrea (Russell) Burton, Mary Dietsch, Mark Rakocy, Jennifer Rakocy, Julie (Michael) Damon, Patty (Mike) Wright and Kathleen Rakocy; and his nine great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Mary Lucansky, whom he married Nov. 16, 1939, who died June 22, 1985; his brothers, Stephen and Joseph Rakocy; and his sisters, Anne Stanislaw, Margaret Roberts, Mary Rehovsky, Sister Delphine, and Irene and Helen Rakocy.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Andrew Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthias Church in Youngstown. Visitation will take place Sunday at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman from 2 to 5 p.m., where a prayer service will be held at 1:45 p.m., and in church on Monday from 9 to 9:30 a.m., prior to Mass. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to say thank you to the staff of the North and West wings of Omni Manor with special thanks extended to all the aides for the kindness shown to Andrew while he was under their care

He served on LST 556 and took part in 15 island invasions,including the Philippines. He witnessed the return of General MacArthur to the Philippines on October 20,1944 at Taclopan,the island of Leyte. He also served on YAG21,a sub-chaser,in the Caribbean. He was also on the battleship U.S.S. Pennsylvania during "Operation Crossroads",the testing of the A-bomb at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. In 1947 he served on the U.S.S.New Jersey which was sent on a European Goodwill Tour. During the Korean War,he was recalled to active duty and served again on the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey, during which time it was engaged in action in the shelling of Wonsan harbor in North Korea.
    He was also appointed district deputy for the Knights of Columbus and was past grand knight of Msr. Mears Council 3930. He also served as Administrative assistant to the state deputy for the K of C of Ohio.
    Mike was employed as a refrigeration fitter at Modern Store Equipment and York-Mahoning Mechanical Contractors ,Giant Eagle Stores and Store Engineering of Youngstown.

    MICHAEL E. RAKOCY SR
    POLAND - Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 22, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Christines Church for Michael E. Rakocy Sr., 87, who died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Hospice House.

    He was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Youngstown, a son of the late Stephen Rakocy and Catherine Dvornicky.

    He was a 1942 graduate of Wilson High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as a combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked as a technician for commercial refrigeration and air conditioning before retiring in 1988. He was also a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union, St. Christine Church Charter member, Knights of Columbus Council 3930 of Austintown and St. Vincent De Paul Pastoral Care.

    Surviving are his wife, Rose (Lenefonte) Rakocy; one sister, Theresa Smrecansky of Minnesota; one son, Michael E. (Sandy) Rakocy Jr. of North Canton; two daughters, Cheryle (Randy) Morgan of Spring Hill, Tenn. and Bernadette (John) Durkos of Stow; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and seven sisters.

    "PITTSBURGH- Sister Delphine,75,died Friday at the Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity of North Hills in Pittsburgh. Sister Delphine was a daughter of Steve and Catherine Rakocy She was in her 57th year of her religeous life,which she entered from St. Matthias Parish in Youngstown. She graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor of science degree in education. In her teaching career, Sister delphine taught elementary grades for 24 years in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg. She served as a practical nurse for four years and as an aide at the Vincentian Child care center for three years. Her last assignment was at St. Thomas Parish in Clarksville, as CCD Coordinator,where she served for 16 years. sister Delphine is survived by a sister, Theresa Smrecansky of Boardman; and two brothers, Michael Rakocy of Boardman and Andrew Rakocy of Struthers. She was preceded in death by two brothers,Steve and Joseph Rakocy; and three sisters,Ann Stanislaw, Margaret Roberts and Mary Rohovsky.
