- Douglas enlisted July 6, 1861 in the Union Army at the age of 27. He was discharged July 18, 1865. Four years, 12 days. He was a Seargent, Company E 28th Regiment of the Penna volunteers, Infantry. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1864. During the fighting at the battle he ran into his older brother Issac on the second day of fighting. It was during a retreat from the confederacy that they met. Issac was angry that his dad let his younger brother enlist. After the war Douglas was a police officer in Mauch Chunk. At age 59 he was single with no children and living with his sister.

Douglas served as a Sergeant of the 28th Regiment (Goldstream Regiment), Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company E (Civil War). He was promoted to Sergeant on September 18, 1862; wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863; commissioned 1st Lieutenant on June 1, 1865.
