• Notes

  Henry Howland came to Plymouth Colony apparently sometime in the mid-1620's. His brother John was already there, having been a passenger on the "Mayflower". Henry had been apprenticed to his brother Humphrey in London before he came to Plymouth Colony. Henry Howland was a freeman of Plymouth and was listed on the tax rolls in 1633. He was in Duxbury, MA, in 1635, and purchased land there in 1640. He served on the Grand Jury, and was a surveyor of highways. Henry Howland and his wife became devout Quakers and were in constant conflict with the authorities of Plymouth Colony. On occasion they were fined for entertaining Quakers and being absent from public worship of God.
