- Notes for Joseph Jerome Rakocy:
Joseph was born at his parents' home on Columbus Ave. in Youngstown, delivered by Dr. Taylor with Mrs. John Stanislaw (mother-in-law of Anne Rakocy) assisting. Birth registry states that there were 9 other children living and 5 other children dead at the time of the probate court registration (Aug.5,1965). He lived at 1203 E.Indianola from about 1941 to 1945 then 3121 Pine Hollow Dr. (with Andy Kuzak) from 1945 to 1952. He and his family moved to 614 1/2 Oak Hill Ave,living there in 1952, he then moved to 2824 Jean Street where he lived from 1953 to 1969. In 1969 moved to 330 E.Avondale where he lived until his death.
He lived with his parents at 2543 Tampa in Youngstown from about 1937 to 1941. He was baptized on Dec.10,1916 at St. Matthias Church by Father John M. Gerenda, the sponsors being Joseph Petrencik and Catherine Petrencik. he was confirmed on June 13, 1926 at St. Matthias Church by Rt. Rev. J. Schrembs.
He was a scarfer at Republic Steel Corp. where he worked for 42 years, retiring in December 1978. He was a member of St. Matthias Church, its Holy Name Society, USW Local 1331, and its retirees group. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, inducted on June 15,1945, serving on the U.S.S. Chester, a Heavy Cruiser. Attended basic training at Great Lakes Training Center outside of Chicago. Leaving from Philadelphia, his ship passed through the Panama Canal, went to Guam and the Kwajelain Is. and reached Ominato Island in Japan in October 1945. He returned to San Bruno,California where his wife Margaret met him and stayed in Oakland,California. He was discharged in April 1946 with the rank of A/S,S2/C.
He was also an officer in the Order of the Royal Buffaloes, known as the Ro-Buff Club, which was a social club formed from a group of friends working at Republic Steel. They rented a storefront on Poland Ave. as a social room and fielded a softball team for a number of years in the late 1940's and early 1950's.
Tom Horvat was also a member of the club.
Joseph was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown,Ohio in Section 46, Lot 206 Grave 3
