- Michael is a veteran of the U.S.Navy,having served in WWII and Korean War. During WWII,he attended the University of Missouri,taking a course in diesel engines and also attended refrigeration school at Norfolk Naval base in Virginia. He served on LST 556 and took part in 15 island invasions,including the Philippines. He witnessed the return of General MacArthur to the Philippines on October 20,1944 at Taclopan,the island of Leyte. He also served on YAG21,a sub-chaser,in the Caribbean. He was also on the battleship U.S.S. Pennsylvania during "Operation Crossroads",the testing of the A-bomb at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. In 1947 he served on the U.S.S.New Jersey which was sent on a European Goodwill Tour. During the Korean War,he was recalled to active duty and served again on the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey, during which time it was engaged in action in the shelling of Wonsan harbor in North Korea.
He was also appointed district deputy for the Knights of Columbus and was past grand knight of Msr. Mears Council 3930. He also served as Administrative assistant to the state deputy for the K of C of Ohio.
Mike was employed as a refrigeration fitter at Modern Store Equipment and York-Mahoning Mechanical Contractors ,Giant Eagle Stores and Store Engineering of Youngstown.

MICHAEL E. RAKOCY SR
POLAND - Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 22, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Christines Church for Michael E. Rakocy Sr., 87, who died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Hospice House.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Youngstown, a son of the late Stephen Rakocy and Catherine Dvornicky.
He was a 1942 graduate of Wilson High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as a combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked as a technician for commercial refrigeration and air conditioning before retiring in 1988. He was also a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union, St. Christine Church Charter member, Knights of Columbus Council 3930 of Austintown and St. Vincent De Paul Pastoral Care.
Surviving are his wife, Rose (Lenefonte) Rakocy; one sister, Theresa Smrecansky of Minnesota; one son, Michael E. (Sandy) Rakocy Jr. of North Canton; two daughters, Cheryle (Randy) Morgan of Spring Hill, Tenn. and Bernadette (John) Durkos of Stow; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and seven sisters.
